  • Our Story | Bukit Lawang Trust

Our Story We have been serving the community of Bukit Lawang and many surrounding rural communities across North Sumatra for over 20 years. The Bukit Lawang Trust was founded in response to a flash flood in 2003. The flood destroyed much of Bukit Lawang and killed more than 240 people, leaving approximately 1400 people without a home. Founder and Trustee Rebecca Coley had visited the village a couple of months before the flood and decided to take action to help those she had met on her travels. Rebecca set about raising funds and went back with her family to provide basic aid to those affected. Initially, the Trust took the form of a medical clinic serving those who were suffering as a direct result of the disaster. In 2007, fourteen volunteers from Rebecca's home-country travelled to Sumatra to build a permanent structure for the Trust, along with local people and support from the Jersey Overseas Aid Commission. In 2014, the Richard Cann Reading Room was added to our existing centre, following the tragic death of a close friend of the Trust, and volunteer at the local Orangutan Health Project. The 24-year-old, Richard was a friend of many at the Trust and we are very grateful for the generous donations and support from the Richard Cann Wildlife Foundation over the years. The Richard Cann Reading Room continues to honour Richard's passion for wildlife, providing a conservation outreach centre in the local community. In 2020 The Richard Cann reading room became a conservation library that will be open to anyone in the community post COVID-19. What makes the Trust Special? Over the years the Trust has touched the hearts of countless volunteers, visitors and local people. The people of Bukit Lawang and the surrounding area are at the heart of everything that we do. All of our programs are designed in consultation with local people, for the benefit of local people and indeed are also facilitated and delivered by local staff. As we are a small-scale charity, we are able to guarantee that all money donated to the Trust goes to those in the community who need it most, and not to international staff wages, administration fees or expenses. The Trust, while internationally funded, is truly locally driven. Development: Since 2003 the Bukit Lawang Trust has been supporting the bordering communities along the edge of the severely endangered Leuser Ecosystem. Our programs have been developed over years and in partnership with a wide range of NGOs and education providers to ensure that the education you deliver on your placement is second to none! Partnerships & Collaboration: We work with a community of project partners to deliver high standard conservation and education programs, see all of our partners at the bottom of the home page. Flexibility: With up to five 'volunteer cycles' every year, our bookings are completely flexible. We also offer free cancellation and rescheduling up to 30 days before your placement start date, to give you extra peace of mind. Outstanding Reviews: Our volunteer reviews speak for themselves! Find out what our volunteers thought by checking out the 'Reviews' page in the top menu. Alumni Network: We encourage all of our volunteers and visitors to carry out 'Help@Home' projects ensure that your adventure doesn't end at the end of your placement. It is also a great way to stay connected to your fellow volunteers and keep involved with the work at the Trust! Digital Opportunities: Because we understand that not everyone has the time or the money to travel to Indonesia we offer unique digital roles for our passionate eco-warriors on the home front! Grassroots Family: We pride ourselves in being a grassroots family, and that's why all of our International staff are dedicated unpaid volunteers by choice, to allow us to invest the vast majority of donations directly to the people who need it most! As well as this, all of our programs are designed, from day one, with input from the community they will benefit, to ensure that the needs of the local communities are always at the very heart of everything we do. Environmental Conservation: Environmental conservation is at the heart of everything that we do, and we are proud to share the incredible initiatives that we run in North Sumatra. By supporting Tree Nurseries & offsetting our carbon emissions and the emissions of our volunteers flights we directly support the regeneration of this endangered ecosystem. Here at the Trust, we proudly support an ethos of regenerative conservation, and believe that becoming sustainable is just the beginning, our goal is to regenerate the Earth and its natural environments.

  • Reviews | Bukit Lawang Trust

Volunteer Reviews What our Volunteers say Unlike many sustainable development charities, our focus is on the Personal Development of our volunteers as well as the vital conservation and education work that we do. Our Reviews are testament to that ethos! "It was one of the best experiences of my life! It's a fantastic experience and by the end of the 8 weeks you are like a family. I have made friends for life. " Tom, ESL volunteer, 2023 "If you are looking for adventure, to shake things up...get amazing diverse range of experiences...I'd recommend it very highly. I have a sense of gratitude for the whole experience. Yash, Eco-farming and ESL volunteer, 2023 "It's been absolutely unforgettable...the most incredible experience that I have ever had. You will make such a difference. There's incredible support here from the team who are so passionate about what they do..." Rachel, ESL volunteer, 2022 Rosie Plummer ESL Program Manager - 2019 The Trust has given me a whole new family! My students at the Trust were the most fantastic and fun-loving group I could have wished for! I enjoyed teaching a real diversity of English classes during my time in Sumatra. I could go on about the Jungle Treks, the Weddings the motorbikes and the heat! but ill let you find out for yourself. The Trust has taught me that life really is one big adventure! Emma Johann ESL Volunteer I can honestly say it was the best time of my life! The team is amazing and I felt soon as a part of our own little Trust family. Staying at the trust means you actually do things, which is not so common for volunteers in the teaching field. For that I'm really grateful! I've learnt so much about teaching and working with children and am so grateful for everyone who made me feel so needed and loved here! Terima Kasih Banyak! Venitia Acou Youth Livelihood Facilitator This experience has been wonderful and so rich! I can't wait to come again!!! Nuria Golter ESL Volunteer 5 stars out of 5! The Bukit Lawang Trust is a wonderful place for the children of Bukit Lawang and surroundings. They don't only learn about the English Language, but about the world. I could see in their faces and their motivation, how they are always super happy and grateful to go there. It's a safe space for them and often the only possibility to get in touch with people from outside Indonesia. The volunteers always put a lot of effort in to doing their best for the kids! I think this school is a very important place and I hope it can stay alive! Kamilla Stumpe Youth Livelihood Facilitator An experience to bring you further! I still know exactly how excited I was before my placement at the Trust and in the end everything turned out really beautiful and easy-going. Throughout my placement in the Youth-Ranger Program and the Sustainable Enterprise program I could learn a wide range of knowledge. I learned many new teaching skills, met such beautiful people, got to know the Indonesian culture and language and with all these I learned for life. Living and working in the Trust was such an enriching time for me and i loved seeing how warm-hearted and supportive everybody in the Trust and in Bukit Lawang was. I am really grateful for this experience and would recommend everybody who's seeking a beautiful adventure and is interested in environmental education. You'll find yourself welcomed with open arms. Terimah kasih semuanya and see you when i see you! Vanessa ESL Volunteer This experience has taught me so many things and changed my whole life! I can absolutely recommend this once-in-a-lifetime experience to everybody. I worked at the Trust for 3 weeks and most of the time I was teaching Kindergarten kids. I am a social Pedagogue now, but even if you don't have any experiences with kids, I'll promise you will like it. These kids are so amazing - they are so inquisitive and love school. It was always a pleasure to see the kids so happy during the lesson. It was also a quite good experience to see how you can teach things in a different way (no printing, go to copyshop..). The people at the Trust and in Bukit Lawang are so friendly and heart-warming. They will always try their best to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. Like i said I've learnt so much, especially that you don't need as much luxury as we have in Austria. People there are so happy. We had a chance to go jungle trekking and you have to do it! Sleeping in the jungle, enjoying the food and sitting next to an orangutan - best experience of my life!! We have also visited elephants, it was so interesting to see them in real life! Tony D'Amico Conservation Program Manager - 2018 Being able to volunteer with the Bukit Lawang Trust was the experience of a lifetime! There are lots of options on what to do and no matter the person I am sure an unforgettable experience awaits! I volunteered from January to June 2018 and had several tasks ranging from managing volunteers to teaching Conservation Education and building relationships with like-minded individuals and organizations in the area. For me, the time spent with people in the community and fellow volunteers ARE the experience. I wanted to volunteer and support a wonderful organization like the Bukit Lawang Trust, but the people you meet along the way will be the best part of your experience. The food is incredible and the river is fantastic but those relationships last far longer than your trip will. Janine Oworu ESL Volunteer & PM Education The time at the Bukit Lawang Trust will always be one very important part of my life! I was involved at the school from 2016 to 2018. I decided to live in the village of Bukit Lawang when I fell in love with my local husband. That's what happen to many people... falling in love with culture and locals :) I always then had the idea of wanting to help the locals community and kids somehow and to some social and volunteering work. So the Education Centre was the perfect place! Being there for so long, bought me many different experiences (mostly cultural) and the chances to be involved with different projects. Thats what i always loved so much... the huge variety of different people and cultures you get to know, the diversity of jobs and projects waiting there (education, cooking, handicarafts, sports, arts, conservation, rubbish management, sustainability), the local food and nature, the many chances and possibilities, the potential of achieving meaningful and longlasting goals, the diversity of emotions coming along as well. some days will be challenging, but you learn so much about yourself and other people... i dont want to miss that time! Spending every morning with the kids was always my highlight, its so much fun and joy! The kids are the heartbeat of the Trust school, and together with the lovely staff members and community of parents, everyone soon feels like being part of a family. I can promise that leaving this place is hard, sad and emotional... cant remember one volunteer who wasn't crying :) What I also love is that there is a open door and place for everyone; i have met so many different and awesome volunteers, they all had their own great skills, they all were adored by the kids and became close friends with the locals. we all share the same mission. I highly reccomend to everyone to put yourself in this experience and adventure... its a life experience that will chance your way of thinking and living. Spending time in a developing country opens your heart and eyes to things you weren't aware of yet! I still follow up what the Trust is doing regularly, and its wonderful to see what the team has achieved during the last years! you need to check their homepage and learn more about the Trusts work and campaigns (for kids, for the elderly, for animals, for young leaders, for new independent businesses , to empower women, and so many more important categories). And everyone can still stay involved from far away if you wish to and you miss it all :) Got a Question? We would love to hear from you! You can email us at info@bukitlawangtrust.org APPLY NOW

  • Our Work | Bukit Lawang Trust

Our Work We at the Bukit Lawang Trust believe that taking care of the natural environment and protecting planet Earth is not just an occupation of a few individuals, but the responsibility of every single one of us. That is why, every one of the programmes we run are built around the United Nations 17 sustainable development goals. By doing this we ensure that the amazing work that our volunteers do on our programs not only makes a long lasting positive change, but also works towards the preservation and protection of our natural environment. So what exactly are the SDGs? In September 2015, the United Nations created a '2030 Agenda' for Sustainable Development that includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals or SDGs. This Agenda emphasizes working together not as a religion race or nation, but as a species. United in our common goal of achieving sustainable development for everyone everywhere. Click on the Icons below to find out more about each goal. Does this look like paradise? Look again.. More than 2.4 million acres of Indonesian rainforest is cleared and lost each year. Rainforest Action Network Most of this destruction is just to grow one plant. Palm Oil. Large areas of tropical forests and other ecosystems with high conservation values have been cleared to make room for vast monoculture oil palm plantations. This clearing has destroyed critical habitats for many endangered species—including Rhinos, Elephants and Tigers & the Sumatran Orangutan. Burning forests to make room for the crop is also a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. Intensive cultivation methods have resulted in soil pollution and erosion and water contamination. WWF The Sumatran Orangutan: In the last 100 years, the population of Orangutans has gone from approximately 230,000 to just 7,500 currently living in in the Leuser Ecosystem in North Sumatra. And with a decrease in population of around 1000 every year, the Sumatran Orangutan is on the verge of Extinction. Most of this is caused by the destruction of their natural habitat. Orangutan habitat in North Sumatra is being lost at an extremely high rate, mainly due to fire and conversion of forests to oil palm plantations and other agricultural development. This species depends on high-quality forests. Widespread forest fires, many set deliberately to clear land for plantations, are becoming a regular disaster. Not only do fires destroy vast areas of orangutan habitat, but thousands of these slow-moving apes are thought to have burned to death, unable to escape the flames. WWF What the Trust is doing "Sedikit Demi Sedikit lama lama Menjadi Bukit" What is this? Our motto, "Sedikit demi Sedikit lama lama Menjadi Bukit" translates in English to "Little by Little we climb the mountain". It speaks of the challenges we face as a species in tackling Human caused climate change, and our willingness to push forward through adversity to preserve our shared home on Earth. We at the Trust believe that tackling climate change and preserving our natural environment is not only important but vital for our species survival, and the survival of all other species we share this planet with. It is not a occupation of a few dedicated individuals, but the responsibility of every human on earth. Only together can we thrive. Below are just some of the vital conservation initiatives we run in North Sumatra Indonesia, and we are only just getting started! Sustainable Development Goals: Since 2019 we have aligned ourselves with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, adapting and developing all of our programs to work towards these vital objectives. In doing so, we are ensuring that the impact our programs, volunteers and staff have in Indonesia, is positive and long lasting. Ecological Farming Project: Through the delivery of our Ecological Farming Program we teach local farmers about sustainable best practices, and how they can have a successful farm without harming the natural habitat. We also promote the use of natural farming practices and permacultures, and help to educate communities on the harms of pesticide usage and palm oil crops. Tree Planting: We have teamed up with the amazing people at Erna's Ecological Farming Project and their Tree Nursery to help promote regenerative conservation. Having Planted over 200 trees already in collaboration with several land owners the Tree Nursery has been a huge success. Whats more! From 2021 we will be planting 1 Tree for every single volunteer that joins us on our programs. Conservation Education: For 13 years, we have been providing conservation education to all of our students from over 7 different rural communities along the border of the Leuser Ecosystem. This includes education in topics such as: - Climate Change - Habitat & Species conservation - Deforestation & Reforestation - Recycling (incl Eco Brick Production) - Pollution & Carbon emissions Guardians of the Forest: In 2019 we teamed up with the amazing people at Darwin Animal Doctors to develop the 'Youth Ranger Program'. This program teaches our students about Jungle Ranger patrol duties, wildlife conservation, protection of the natural environment and sustainable living. The program aims to inspire in our students an empathy for the natural world and in doing so facilitate its long term preservation. Offsetting Carbon Emissions: We've teamed up with our consortium of local partners to offset the carbon emissions produced from our volunteers flights, by supporting reforestations initiatives along the boundary lands of the Leuser Ecosystem. Did you know.... on average 1 tree removes a tonne of CO2 from the atmosphere in its lifetime. Bukit Lawang Trust Conservation Festival Each year in August, the Bukit Lawang Trust runs a large scale conservation festival, based in or around the community of Bukit Lawang in North Sumatra. 2020s Festival was unfortunately cancelled due to safety concerns with the global COVID-19 Pandemic, however our festival in 2019 was a huge success. The festival brought together hundreds of people from all over the world to discuss approaches to tackling climate change in Indonesia. This included over 23 NGOs and 40 different organisations. 2019s festival saw organisations, charities and individual make over 40 public pledges for Funding resources and support towards conservation efforts within the Leuser Ecosystem. Not to mention a guest appearance from Farwiza Farhan, a committed climate activist and conservationist as well as chairperson of Haka Sumatra. • COVID-19 Safety | Bukit Lawang Trust

COVID-19 Safety SAFE SMART SUSTAINABLE ALWAYS. COVID-19 HEALT & SAFETY Over the past 17 years, the Bukit Lawang Trust has worked together with our project partners, volunteers students and Beneficiaries to implement long term sustainable, positive change in and around the community of Bukit Lawang in North Sumatra. Unfortunately, due to the unprecedented global impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic, we had to make the sad decision to cancel our volunteer placements throughout 2020 and the beginning of 2021. This decision was made in order to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and importantly, to keep our students, staff and volunteers safe. The good news is, that with the introduction of several vaccines around the world and various other successful medical advancements and with a widespread reduction in cases around the world, borders are starting to reopen and travel is once again becoming an option. Although tourism is not yet allowed in Indonesia, we anticipate that this will restart in the summer of 2021. In the meantime, our team will continue to monitor the situation and guidance from the Centre for Disease Control (CDC), the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the local government advice and guidance in the UK and Indonesia. Whilst this does mean we have had to postpone all volunteer placements for the time being, the wider impact of the pandemic means that our work is more vital then ever before. That's why we've introduced digital placements that you can do from the safety of your own home. In addition we are busy putting in place strict safety measures to ensure that our operations meet the international health and safety standards before we commence volunteer placements again later this year. The response to COVID-19 across the world has greatly impacted all of our programs, however the situation is ever changing and we expect to be running placements as usual by July this year. We are contacting volunteers who have booked onto placements in short the term prior to their start date to give them real time updates on the situation as it unfurls, however if you are booked onto a program before July 2021 and have not heard from us, please get in touch. As always the health and wellbeing of all of our students, staff and volunteers is at the heart of everything that we do. If the situation worsens and we deem it too much of a risk to go ahead with any planned programs, we will take further action to rearrange placements and organise safety strategies. Additionally, we have now introduced a range of safety measures including mandatory mask wearing inside, Temperature checks on arrival, reduced class sizes, outdoor lessons wherever possible, and regular hand washing at the start and end of all classes. If you have any questions and/or concerns about COIVD-19 in relation to your placement or the Bukit Lawang Trust in general, please don't hesitate to get in touch, either by email at bukitlawangtrustcenter@gmail.com or chat live with us here using the chat logo in the bottom right of the page. you can also send us a message on any of our social media platforms and one of our team will get back to you as soon as possible. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Updated 10/02/2021 Additionally, we now require all volunteers coming on our 2021 placements to have had either a full course of an accepted Vaccine (email us to find out which vaccines we accept) or a PCR COVID-19 Test with a negative result within 7 days of arriving on your placement. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Updated 22/03/2021 We have now made the decision to make a COVID-19 Vaccination a compulsory requirement for all volunteers, staff or interns on any of our programs. This decision is based on the current guidance we have from both the Indonesian government and the UK government. As well as general updates from the CDC & WHO. In line with this policy change, we are also postponing all volunteer placements in Sumatra until January 2022. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Updated 18/10/2021 We have now reduced our safety measures in line with current guidelines from the WHO and the Indonesian Government. From today our staff are no longer required to wear masks, and we are no longer requiring our visitors and students to wear masks. However we continue to conduct hand washing twice daily as part of our Kindergarten classes and All staff and volunteers have a COVID-19 vaccine before working with us, as per our safety policy. Ok lets go!
