Projects

On 23rd march 2007 15 volunteers from Jersey made their way to Bukit lawang North Sumatra Indonesia with a mission to build a health clinic. This was a partnerhip project between Jersey Overseas Aid and the Bukit Lawang Charitable Trust. JOA provided £20,000.00 just for the building materials and the Trust and volunteers must raise the rest. The volunteers did extremely well raising £17,000.00 in 6 months. This was through a huge effort including car washes at ransoms, Bag Packs at Checkers, and a detox day at Harbour galleries.

The team consisted of builders, carpenters, a roofer and a nurse.
The names are
Rebecca Coley (leader from Bukit Lawang Trust)
Ian Brown (leader from Jersey Overseas Aid)
Kathryn Brown (teacher)
Anita Brown (legal)
Nina Cornish (environment – States)
Christa Roberts (gov)
Jon Richardson (Islands insurance)
Kirsten Miller (teacher)
David Ferey (builder)
Susan Gillespie (legal)
Rachel Hall (legal)
David West (builder – technical leader)
Shirley Randel (nurse)
Robert Randel (roof)
John Campbell (major – oldest member at 76!!)

The trip was very successful - please read Christa’s blog for more info on the trip. After the team left in April 2007, the local builders employed by the Trust continued work. The new clinic was completed in December 2007 and opened its doors in January 2008. It has improved facilities for healthcare and promotion, and free medical care, to assist the population’s recovery in a realistic, practical and positive way. The team from across the road moved from the temporary health clinic into the new building! Everyone was extremely proud of the new fantastic building!

Now we have ambitious plans to fill each of the sixteen rooms with a visiting dentist, ear nose and throat specialist and an ultra-sound machine. We also believe that an ambulance will help the clinic to fulfil its full potential- reaching the people who really need it but who can’t get to it.
