English teaching scheme

The English Teacher Scheme runs throughout the year and each placement is two months (60 days).  We are looking for teachers who are at least TEFL / TESOL / CELTA trained and qualified teachers are very welcome.

We also accept volunteers without teaching qualifications to be teaching assistants or volunteer with other work.

We are closed for Ramadan, Indonesian Public Holidays and Christmas, otherwise we are open all year round.

There are kindergarten lessons every morning 8 – 10 am and volunteer teachers join the lessons to assist the local teachers.

There are two one-hour lessons every afternoon and two evening classes for adults. The volunteer teachers plan and lead these lessons and our Indonesian teachers assist with translation.

We need both volunteer teachers and assistants because we like to have two teachers on placement at a time.

We are looking for teachers who are –

Independent (happy to work under their own steam without supervision)

Happy to use their own initiative to see what needs to be done and put in place effective systems, events or meetings to keep a high standard of teaching and also respond to current needs as things change.

Happy to do more than just “teach” – sometimes we need help with logistics and the running of the Trust.

Happy to have meetings with staff and manage the day to day “to do” list to ensure the smooth running of the Trust.

Embrace the community spirit – get to know people in the community and always invite and welcome new students.

Care about conservation – encourage a positive approach towards the protection of the Gunung Leuseur National Park and the Sumatran orangutan.

Happy to think of ideas to make the Trust a better learning environment and incorporate them as much as possible.

Be a "do-er" get on with doing what needs to be done and happy to engage in a variety of tasks, from teaching to painting - computer lessons to sing-alongs.

If this sounds like you – the experience is a culture exchange and richly rewarding to anyone who throws themselves into it and makes the most of the opportunity.

The cost of staying with us is £150.00 per month. This covers food and accommodation (3 meals a day Monday – Friday) and airport transfers (the airport is a 4 hour drive away and costs £40.00 for a pick-up).

We also ask volunteers to do fundraising for us to help us achieve our goals each year. WE ask for a target of £500.00 but we are flexible on this as we understand volunteers may not always have time to arrange fundraisers before their trip.

You can see where the funds go whilst you are out there and also have a say in how the funds you raised are spent. We are transparent with how funds are spent and aim to fulfil our WISH LIST each year and keep improving the school as much as possible.
